Genesis
- The Défi Canderel was created in 1989 to raise funds to finance cancer research.
- It was founded by the chairman and founder of Canderel, Mr. Jonathan Wener, in the face of his wife Susan’s colon cancer diagnosis. As a two-time cancer survivor, Susan is the inspiration for the run. Resilience, her memoir, describes her journey from diagnosis to recovery.
Défi Canderel
- Year after year, thousands of runners from various companies take up the challenge and raise funds to fight cancer.
- To date, the Défi has raised over $ 17 million for cancer research.
- These funds are divided equally between the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Centre of McGill University, and the Institut du cancer de Montréal affiliated to the Université de Montréal.
- Funds are given without strings attached so that the research centres can determine the most pertinent use for the money.
- The annual campaign reached the $ 1 million mark in 2014 with a steady increase every year since. On the 29th edition of the Défi in 2018, $ 1.5 million were raised.
May 9th – 30th edition
- On this milestone year, the Défi Canderel celebrates its 30th edition with a $ 2.5 million goal. $ 2.2 million have been raised to date.
- On May 9th 2019, thousands of superheroes will take to the streets of Montreal to run a 2.5 km stretch between McGill College avenue and Mackay street.
- On this day, participants meet in a festive setting on the campus of McGill University where games and other activities are run by companies and sponsors.
- Susan Wener and Jonathan Wener will be available for interviews and photos on the day of the event.
